Whether you want a sweet dessert or simple fruit, these ideas for 4th of July dishes are perfect for taking to get-togethers or eating at home.
This quick and easy flag made with strawberries, blueberries, and bananas can also be made with marshmallows in place of the bananas. To keep bananas from browning after they are peeled and sliced, put them in a mixture of water and lemon juice. The ascorbic acid in the lemon juice works on bananas the same way it does on sliced apples.

A richer dessert is this this Festive 4th of July Flag Cake (shown below), which is a summertime version of Cherries in the Snow.
Finally, the recipe below has a similar look to the above cake but uses a simpler recipe.
Festive Flag Cake
- 1 cake prepared angel food cake, sliced
- 2 cups whipped cream
- 1 pint blueberries
- 2 pints raspberries or strawberries
In a 9×13 pan, spread 1/3 of the whipped cream, and a layer of 1/2 of the cake slices. Repeat these two layers, finally ending with the remaining 1/3 of the whipped cream on top. Top with raspberries (or strawberries) and blueberries in the shape of a US flag. Refrigerate overnight before serving.
